From the moment you touch down at the airport you get a feel for how luxurious Dubai is. Forget San Tropez, or the 'new' San Tropez, Croatia's Hvar. Forget Monaco. If you want to rock up on the beach alongside people wearing shirts made of gold who carry mobile phones covered in the stuff, Dubai is the place for you.
After the completion of the famous Palm Jumeirah, and a series of artificial islands off the coast, Dubai garnered more press attention than the President of the United Arab Emirates could have asked for. If it wasn't previously a top glamorous holiday destination, Dubai certainly earned it after that.
Dubai also has the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, named after that same president. The building has a 30-acre lake by it, where the Dubai Fountains shoot impressively high jets of water into the sky in time to music.
Dubai is certainly a crowd pleaser. It has miles and miles of golden sands and although many of the beaches are owned by hotels, and obviously you can book to stay at a resort with a private beach, there are also several beaches you can enjoy for either very little or for free.
The Jumeirah Beach Park charges just a small fee and gives you access to not only a wonderful beach, but to great facilities and lovely lawns. The popular Wild Wadi Water Park is also located here - perfect for when the kids get bored. The water park features 23 slides and a thunderstorm simulation. The terrifyingly tall Jumeirah Sceirah ride is a favourite with many.
Al Mamzar Beach Park is a good alternative to Jumeirah Beach Park. It has similar features but is useful if you aren't staying over on the Jumeirah strip. There is also the Kite Beach, aptly named because of the amount of kite surfers who use it. Kite Beach makes for some nice photos and pleasant people watching as a result of all the colourful kites.
Not only a clean and attractive beach, although sometimes overcrowded, the Burb Al Arab beach is a perfect spot to take pictures of Dubai's most memorable building, the Burb Al Arab. Once the tallest hotel in the world and with the onetime invented line that it is the world's only seven star hotel, it is best viewed from the outside, as aside from anything else, the Rolls Royce guarded entry will cost you at least a meal in one of the expensive restaurants if you aren't going to stay in the hotel itself.
Astonishingly, even though much of the city now resembles something out of a futuristic desert sci-fi epic, there's still a good history-filled section worth a visit. The Bastakia District with its sandstone buildings, amphorae and souk will give you a feel of what Dubai once was.
Away from the beaches and souks in the giant playground that Dubai is, there's also immensely popular Dolphin Bay Atlantis the Palm. Here hotel guests and visitors can swim or scuba dive with dolphins in a 4.5 hectare dolphin habitat. Dubai even has Ski Dubai if you get too hot. Ski Dubai is the size of three football pitches, is filled with real snow and comes complete with penguins.
